About the Ohio Supreme Court
The Ohio Supreme Court is the highest state court, with both appellate and original jurisdiction.
Appeals may be taken from Ohio’s regional Courts of Appeals. In addition, appeals from the Board of Tax Appeals and from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio go directly to the Supreme Court.
Of importance to public policy, the Supreme Court enjoys original jurisdiction in considering an extraordinary writ of Mandamus. This historic writ from the English church courts is used when a public official refuses to act pursuant to law, whether in state or local government. Public policy initiatives may begin at the Supreme Court in this way, binding the entire state and all public officials to the resulting precedent.
An effective strategy in cases of statewide interest is to file amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) briefs, highlighting our clients’ interest in particular public policy communications.
