Ohio’s System for Pharmacy Tech Registration is Still Uncertain

Published: Mar 02, 2017 by Levi Tkach

By now, nearly everyone working in Ohio’s pharmacy industry knows about Senate Bill 319, the new law requiring separate licensure for individuals employed as pharmacy technicians. What remains unclear is when and how pharmacy technicians will apply for and receive these new licenses. As of February 2017, the Ohio Pharmacy Board has not yet released the process for obtaining a pharmacy technician license. The Pharmacy Board cannot unveil the registration processes until it finalizes its registration rules.

If you are a pharmacy technician and have concerns about practicing without a license, there is no reason to worry today. The new licensure requirement does not become effective until April 6, 2018. While the deadline for registration is more than a year away, the Pharmacy Board plans to open the registration process well in advance in order to allow enough time for individuals to register. Graff & McGovern will post additional information on this website after the Pharmacy Board has adopted the rules covering the new licensure process.

Until April 6, 2018, all persons employed as technicians must meet the current qualification requirements under Ohio Administrative Code 4729-4. These requirements include successfully passing an examination and obtaining a criminal background check. More information can be found at the Pharmacy Board’s website.
