Is the Ohio Medical Board Closer to Adopting New Rules for Massage Therapists?

Published: Apr 02, 2017 by Levi Tkach

Following significant criticism from practitioners, the Ohio Medical Board has revised a proposal mandating continuing education for licensed massage therapists. Last October the Board proposed a new set of rules that would have required all Ohio licensed massage therapists take at least twenty-four hours of continuing education credit every year. In response to the proposal, the Board received numerous adverse comments noting that twenty-four hours per year would be excessive when considering the low pay of massage therapists and the hardship imposed to take time off or travel to take the courses.

Based on the comments the Medical Board has revised the proposed continuing education requirements down to twelve hours every biennial licensing period and will waive the continuing education requirement during the first renewal period. The Board also revised the proposed rules to clarify distance learning and home study coursework. Anyone interested in viewing the proposed rules can find a copy at the Medical Board website, or here.

Any person affected by these proposed rules may submit comments on the current proposed rules no later than April 11, 2017. Comments should be submitted to both the Medical Board and the Common Sense Initiative Office.
