Pharmacy Technician Renewals and Restricted Sub-Status

Published: Aug 16, 2024 by Levi Tkach

In April 2018, Ohio converted the previously unregulated occupation of pharmacy technician into a mandatory registration vocation. Today, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy reports that more than 13,800 pharmacy technicians hold active certificates to work in Ohio. Most pharmacy technicians operate under the same certification renewal cycle, which just recently ended.

During the Board’s August 2024 meeting, Board staff reported that more than 700 pharmacy technicians had their certifications placed into a restricted sub-status for failing to timely renew.  While in the restricted sub-status, these technicians are legally prohibited from performing any function in a pharmacy that requires certification. Any technician who intends to reinstate their restricted certification in the future would be wise to cease working in a pharmacy until their certificate is reinstated.

Working on a restricted certification risks formal legal action against not only the pharmacy technician, but also the Pharmacy and the Responsible Person for the Pharmacy. Reinstatement of these restricted certificates is not as simple as paying a late fee. The technicians will also need to attest to their employment status during the term of the restriction.

If you are a pharmacy technician who has received a proposed denial or other notice of opportunity for hearing, you should consider contacting the attorneys at Graff & McGovern, LPA.
